April 17, 2002 Newsletter The California PARENT Center E-News

The California PARENT Center is a statewide Parental Information and Resource Center (PIRC) based in San Diego, CA, funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the state of California. It is a project of The June Burnett Institute for Children Youth and Families, founded in 1985 by San Diego State University Foundation through a $1.5 million endowment from the estate of June Estelle Burnett.

Each month, the California PARENT Center will disseminate valuable information highlighting the California PARENT Center’s best practice research-based programs, information on the California PARENT Center’s collaborating community-based organizations, and current events impacting the lives of children and families in the state of California.

Evaluation Materials – This month we would like to spotlight the efforts of the U.S. Department of Education and the Parental Assistance Coordination Center (PACC) to make information more accessible to those that need it. The U.S. Department of Education is in the process of developing web pages on their http://www.ed.gov/ web site that will contain examples of ways to evaluate programs that are linked to student academic success. Right now, you can go to http://www.ed.gov/offices/OUS/PES/eval_workshops.html and review recent evaluation workshop materials. Keep checking back with the site and there will be additional items for you to download. A library of information relevant to Parental Information and Resource Centers (PIRCs) is being built by PACC, managed by McFarland and Associates, Inc. This information will be subsequently posted to the http://www.pacc-pirc.net/ web site on the download page for future reference.

Community-School Dialog – We would like to share some information on community-school dialog, focusing on ways of initiating and maintaining it. One of the main lessons learned by Local Education Funds (LEFs) is the importance of a continuing dialogue between a community and its school board. This five-part online guide gives proven tips and strategies to schools and community-based organizations, in convening, structuring, and facilitating a successful conversation between the community and its school board. The information can be found at: http://www.publiceducation.org/resources/public_conversation.htm.

Calendar of Upcoming Events – Keep checking the California PARENT Center’s calendar of upcoming events. The calendar is updated often and contains many important symposiums and conferences that can provide very useful information to parents, parent leaders and community-based organizations. Our calendar can be found on our website at http://parent.sdsu.edu/calendar/default.htm.

The California PARENT Center always welcomes the exchange of information and input from the community. We invite you to visit our website at: http://parent.sdsu.edu/.
