California PARENT Center E-News A Project of the June Burnett Institute for Children, Youth and Families August 15, 2002 Greetings and welcome to the California PARENT Center E-News Monthly. The California PARENT Center is a statewide Parental Information and Resource Center (PIRC) based in San Diego, CA, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It is a project of the June Burnett Institute for Children Youth and Families, administered by San Diego State University Foundation. This month, the California PARENT Center would like to share information on three very important topics: 1) information on supplemental education services in relation to "No Child Left Behind;" 2) a list of research-based programs with contact information; and 3) the California Reading List Web Site. Since many email programs cannot read HTML script properly, the E-News has been sent in both Text (.txt) and HTML (.html) formats. If you would prefer to view the newsletter as an HTML document, you will find it attached to this message. Enjoy! California Department of Education - Guide on Supplemental Education Services The California Department of Education has made available a document that serves as a guide on supplemental services. Included are a glossary of terms and a step-by-step overview of supplemental services. The document is available in Word (.doc) and Portable Document (.pdf) format for your convenience. The following links will open the documents and allow you to download them onto your computer: http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/SASA/suppsvcsguid.pdf http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/SASA/suppsvcsguid.doc List of Research-Based Programs from McFarland and Associates McFarland and Associates has created a list of researched-based model programs that might be of interest to you. Many of you are already using several of these programs or a variation of them in your programs. This list includes the name of the primary program developer along with their phone number, email address and web site if available. Feel free to review these programs and decide if you can adapt any of their researched-based programs for your use. The document is available in Portable Document (.pdf) format. The California Reading List Web Site This site has been developed to assist parents and students in selecting books written at a level of difficulty that corresponds with a child's ability to read. Drawn from California's recommended literature lists for students in kindergarten through grade twelve, the reading lists on this site have been specifically tailored to match the achievement level of each student who participated in the statewide assessment program during the previous spring. The following link will take you to the California Reading List Web Site: http://www.cde.ca.gov/statetests/star/readinglist.html. The California PARENT Center always welcomes the exchange of information and input from the community. We invite you to visit our website at: http://parent.sdsu.edu/.
