March 20, 2002 Newsletter The California PARENT Center E-News

This month we are highlighting President Bush’s “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.” Scientifically based research is a fundamental idea in the Act, and the Act calls for the use of this research as the foundation for many education programs & for classroom instruction. On February 6, Assistant Secretary for Elementary & Secondary Education Susan Neuman hosted a seminar where leading experts in the fields of education and science discussed the meaning of scientifically based research and its status across various disciplines, including reading, math, safe and drug-free schools, and comprehensive school reform. The full transcript of the seminar can be found at: http://www.ed.gov/nclb/research/.

We are also providing useful legislative information pertaining to education within the United States, especially within California. Also included is the Governor’s 2002-03 California Budget. You can find these items on our website at: http://parent.sdsu.edu/legislative/default.htm.

Our calendar of upcoming education-related conferences and events is still available at: http://parent.sdsu.edu/calendar/default.htm.

Feel free to submit any information that you would like to share to Robert Hegner, cpclist@projects.sdsu.edu, and thank you for making our E-News such a success. We appreciate your input and dedication to the community.

Thank you again and have a terrific month.
