California PARENT Center Staff Attend National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS) October Conference

This week, our two lead California PARENT Center staff members, including the editor of the e-News, are attending the October Conference of the National Network of Partnership Schools, headed by Dr. Joyce Epstein at Johns Hopkins University.  This year, the California PARENT Center is being recognized for its work as a partnership organization (See E-News for July and August posted on the California PARENT Center web site at http://parent.sdsu.edu).  Additional information is also posted on the National Network of Partnership Schools web site at this address: National Network of Partnership Schools.  Due to our rather fast paced schedule, this issue of the E-News will be more abbreviated than it has been in the recent past .

California PARENT Center Upcoming Conferences for Fall 2005-2006

The California PARENT Center is pleased to announce our fall schedule of Leadership Training Conferences. "Using Parent Involvement to Increase Student Success and Academic Achievement" is the theme for all of the upcoming California PARENT Center Conferences.

Research confirms that when parents are engaged and involved, students’ academic performance increases.  Based on Dr. Joyce Epstein’s framework for family-school partnerships, the California PARENT Center has developed a two-day Leadership Development Conference that addresses how to build and strengthen School, Family and Community Partnerships. All are in collaboration with the CA Dept. of Education.

Resources for Parents and Others - Past Issues of the California PARENT Center E-News Designed for You.

We would like to bring your attention to the last three issues of the California PARENT Center E-News for July, August and September.  These issues were edited specifically for principals, teachers and parents connected to Title I Schools that are in “Improvement Status.”  So, we thought we should remind you that you have easy access to the links that can help you meet your School Improvement goals.  In this section, Resources for Parents and Others (below), you will find the major focus of each of the past three issues and the connections to the web links you need.  We refer to the issues “most recent” first, and move backward.

Key Resources for Program Improvement Schools – September 23, 2005See California PARENT Center E-News September 2005 at: http://parent.sdsu.edu/e-news/default.htm

This year, many schools, and entire districts are moving into Program Improvement Status because they have not been able to demonstrate sufficient improvement in accord with the No Child Left Behind Act. This means that many principals, teachers and parents may be working hard to rapidly gain additional knowledge about the NCLB legislation, guidelines, consequences for insufficient improvement, the background of the Act, and examples of schools from high risk communities that have been able to demonstrate improvement.  There is a lot of good information that can be obtained on line.  The challenge for many is how to quickly find the sites and information you most need.  In this issue of the E-News, we have attempted to compile a few selections that can give a jump start to a school or district team seeking to rapidly update information
