California PARENT Center Receives 2006 Award from National Network of Partnership Schools

In August, the California PARENT Center was very pleased to learn from Dr. Joyce Epstein, prominent researcher in the area of school, family and community partnerships from Johns Hopkins University, that it will be receiving an award from the National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS) for the second year in a row.

The award recognizes the Center’s efforts to train administrators, school staff, and parent leaders across California in establishing effective school, family and community partnerships programs to increase academic achievement. The trainings are presented in collaboration with the California Department of Education's Title I Policy and Partnerships Office, and the College of Extended Studies at San Diego State University.

Since beginning in 2004, the California PARENT Center’s Leadership Development Conferences for School, Family and Community Partnerships have reached more than 3,000 individuals.  During the most recent year (July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2006), the Center trained 1,065 individuals.  This number includes 400 participants registered in the Parent Involvement Liaison Certificate training courses, done in collaboration with the College of Extended Studies and San Diego State University.  Participation is financed through a combination of registration fees and specialized contracts with the State of California and local districts.  Conference evaluations continue to show a high level of participant satisfaction with the Center’s two-day training content and approach.

The 2006 award includes special recognition from NNPS in the form of a $500.00 prize, a plaque and registration at an annual fall NNPS conference. Additionally, the PARENT Center will be recognized in the fall issue of Type 2, the NNPS Newsletter. It will also be listed in the Honors Column of Education Week sometime in the fall.
