Homework Assignment:  Conference participants are asked to complete a “What’s Working Well?” form describing one current successful practice of school, family and community partnerships for sharing on Day 2.   

 

                                                                    

DAY 2   AGENDA

8:30-9:00                     Sharing of “What’s Working Well” at Participants’ districts and schools (forms will be collected, summarized & send to conference participants to add to their resource notebooks)

 

9:00-9:15                     Resources:  Review of resources available through the California Network of Partnership Schools and the National Network of Partnership Schools

                                               

9:15-9:30                     BREAK

 

9:30-12:00                   Morning Concurrent Sessions

                                    (note:  sessions A, B, and D will be offered again in the afternoon)

 

A)      Reaching Out to Underinvolved Parents

Research shows that what schools do to reach out and lower barriers to greater participation and help parents take active roles in their children’s education is crucial to establishing effective home-school partnerships.  Attitudes and actions do make a difference. Learn how to build relationships in culturally and linguistically diverse communities and plan practical activities that connect parents to school improvement goals and implement successful outreach strategies.

 

B)     Getting Started at Elementary School Level

Learn strategies for setting up successful action teams,

and planning innovative partnership programs that involve the whole school community. You will receive “start up” materials for implementing a “Family Friday” literacy activity, “Dads Clubs”, special “Mother-Daughter/Mother-Son” activities and how to use Title 1 funds to offer family literacy services.  .Also, learn the “value added” concept for enriching your current partnership activities.                                                                                                                                                                                       

         

C)     Getting Started at Middle and High School Levels

Partnership programs at secondary schools can be challenging                                                         

to establish and sustain. Learn how to successfully involve                          school staff, parents, students and community members to develop relationships and activities that support student learning and the work of the school.  Practical (staff and parent) outreach strategies and programs will be shared, Learn the

“value added” concept for enriching your current partnership activities. (Offered in the morning session only.)

 

D) Preparing Parents to Take Leadership Roles

Parent Leadership includes parents participating on Action Teams, as PTA/parent organization leaders, School Site Council and English Learners Advisory Committee members, room parents/volunteers to help teachers, and reaching out to involve other parents. Learn successful strategies to lower barriers to greater participation and help parents build leadership skills. You will receive materials to conduct trainings at your school on: how to be an effective leader/member of a team, how to plan and run productive, time efficient meetings, how to deal with difficult people at meetings, and how to identify and solve problems using a simple problem solving model.

                                    E)  Know Where to Look:  Finding Funds to Support Your                    

      Partnership Programs 

Partnership activities require time, energy and usually some funding/resources in order to be successful. There are funds and resources if you know where and how to look for them. Learn about ways Title 1 parent involvement funds can be used, how to tap resources in your local community and how to go after grant opportunities. You will also get tips on how to do “follow up “ with your funders to ensure that they are properly recognized for their support.
